NEXT FRIENDSHIP GROUP MEETING: A Life-Changing Faith Opportunity for All

Our next Friendship Group meeting will be held on Thursday, August 17 at 7 p.m. Eastern Time via Zoom.

Fr. Sean Morris, OMV will talk with us about the book It's Good To Be Here by Christina Chase and answer your questions.

In this awe-inspiring book about a 21st century, wheel-chair bound woman, whose spirituality has been compared to St. Thérèse of Lisieux, you will find:

-Consolation in how much God loves you in the midst of your sufferings
-Joy that you are cherished by God no matter how little and crippled you are, spiritually or otherwise
-How none of us can exist apart from limitations and boundaries
-Why none of us can walk through this life unaided. In the presence of God, not a single one of us can even stand
-How Jesus' choice to join us in our littleness -- exposing Himself to the limitations of time and space and circumstance, even unto His death on the Cross -- helps us transcend our greatest suffering

If you haven't signed up for the Friendship Groups, the link to join is: https://mailchi.mp/sophiainstitute/friendship-groups

Once you have signed up, you will receive updates, including the Zoom link and discussion questions, about a week prior to the meeting.

The book is on sale at sophiainstitute.com

Please contact Mary Beth Bracy at mbracy@sophiainstitute.com with any questions or for more information.

SAFE ENVIRONMENT CORNER: Did you know? ...

Did You Know…while some sexual abuse is purely opportunistic, most children are groomed and lured into situations where they are vulnerable to abuse. Common grooming strategies include:

  • Befriending parents, particularly single parents, to gain access to their children.

  • Offering babysitting services to busy parents or guardians.

  • Taking jobs and participating in community events that involve children.

  • Becoming a guardian or foster parent.

  • Offering to coach children’s sports or chaperone overnight trips.

  • Volunteering in youth organizations.

  • Loitering in places children frequent like parks, playgrounds, malls, game arcades, etc.

  • Befriending youngsters on social media.

For more information, contact the Safe Environment Office at (315) 393-2920

ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDSHIP:

for the August 5/6 Bulletin

Plastic Free July Continued into August ... As plastic production and waste generation increases, it is clear we can’t recycle our way out of the problem; we need to ‘turn off’ the plastics tap! Check your trash this week for single- use plastics, and consider one you can avoid when shopping next time.

ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDSHIP:

for the August 12/13 Bulletin

“There is no such thing as away. When you throw something away, it must go somewhere.” Often our society falls prey to ‘out of sight, out of mind’ thinking- businesses, individuals, governments. Check out The Story of Stuff Project by Anne Leonard to find out more about the ‘stuff we throw away,’ where it goes and ways we may reduce it.

U.S. SISTERS AGAINST HUMAN TRAFFICKING: monthly bulletin announcements

August – The first principle of Catholic Social Teaching is respect for the dignity of persons.  Traffickers ignore this principle by treating people as commodities, products to be bought and sold.  See Catholic Sisters Against Human Trafficking for more information.
