WORLD DAY FOR CONSECRATED LIFE: February 2, 2022

As the Second Vatican Council clearly stated, by our Baptism all are called to holiness. All who are baptized are consecrated “In the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit” to live the Christian life in faith, hope and love. Living the Christian life, a call is given to each of us to live His love in a particular way of life to love Him more and to serve others.

Many are called to live the married life, others to priesthood, others to the single life. Some are called to live the consecrated life as a religious sister, brother or priest. Pope Saint John Paul II instituted a day for women and men who live the consecrated life. The universal day of celebration is February 2 which is the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord. This day is known as Candlemas Day on which candles are blessed symbolizing Christ who is the Light of the world. Consecrated religious live their vowed life of poverty, chastity and obedience as prophetic witnesses of joy and hope of the Christian message. They offer a radical commitment to God “calling into question the this-worldly values of power, sexuality, and material possessions. Consecration to the evangelical counsels challenges the importance of these things to human dignity.” (Prophetic Witnesses to Joy, Juliet Mousseau, RSCJ)

Parishes will celebrate the World Day for Consecrated Life on February 5-6. There are religious communities within our diocese that continue to serve the People of the North Country by their daily prayer, active involvement in parishes, Catholic schools, Religious Education programs, Diocesan Offices, etc.

The Diocese needs more consecrated women and men to serve the needs of the Church. There are several ways to celebrate this day:
1. Pray for vocations at a Holy Hour
2. Invite a sister or sisters and priest (Missionary of the Sacred Heart, Watertown) to share his/her vocation story
3. Send a card/cards to the sisters and priests expressing gratitude for their vocation
4. Send a donation to a religious community in your area or to the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart to support their seminarians
5. Invite someone to discern their vocation to consecrated life with a religious community in your area or parish.

ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDSHIP:

for the February 5/6 Bulletin

When running properly, a typical clothes dryer extracts a fair quantity of air from within a home and expels it through a vent to the outside. In order to minimize the burden to your home heating system to warm the cold air coming into your home, try doing laundry on the warmest day of the week, if possible.

Mary Immaculate, our Mother and our Patroness,
we ask you to intercede for us with your Son,
as you did at the wedding in Cana.

Pray for us, loving Mother,
and gain for our diocese, our nation and our world,
for our families and loved ones,
the protection of your Maternal mantle from this dreaded virus.

In this time of trial and testing,
teach all of us to love one another and to be patient and kind.
Help us to bring the peace and healing Presence of Jesus to our land and to our hearts.

We come to you with confidence,
knowing that you are our compassionate mother,
health of the sick and cause of our joy.
Keep us in the embrace of your arms,
Help us always to know the love of your Son, Jesus our Lord.

AMEN.

ON OUR KNEES PRAYER CAMPAIGN: United in prayer for the Dobbs Supreme Court Case

October 22 - June 22 all are asked to pray for the protection of life in our nation.

Background: January 22, 1973: Roe v Wade Supreme Court decision began the era of abortion on demand in the USA.
• 2018: Mississippi passed a law protecting unborn children after 15 weeks of gestation, when the baby has a heartbeat, eyes that open, ears that hear, and can move and kick. The law was challenged and the case, known as Dobbs v Jackson Women’s Health Organization, is being heard by the Supreme Court.
• Dobbs v Jackson is a landmark case that could potentially overturn the decision of Roe v Wade. The possibility for future laws protecting the unborn hangs in the balance.
• December 1, 2021: oral arguments for the case were heard. A decision is expected in June 2022. More information at www.prayfordobbs.com
