SAFE ENVIRONMENT CORNER: Did you know? ...

Did you know…in 2019, New York State became the 37th state to enact Erin’s Law. The law requires all public schools to teach classes to students in kindergarten through eighth grade about preventing sexual abuse and exploitation. The legislation mandates that these prevention classes include practical and age-appropriate instruction on how to recognize the warning signs of child sexual abuse and exploitation, and resources on how to find help. The law takes effect on July 1, 2020. For more information, visit http://www.erinslaw.org/

PLANNED GIVING: Creating a Legacy of Love

The following are steps to ensure your affairs are in order before God calls you:

  1. Draft a Will.
  2. Leave enough liquid cash in an obvious location to sustain your survivors to pay the expenses of your estate.
  3. Plan your own funeral.
  4. Leave no financial debt
  5. Write your own obituary
  6. Organize your records
  7. Choose a time to openly discuss these plans with loved ones

ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDSHIP:

(for the September 5/6 Bulletin)

During the Season of Celebration, we are invited to become more aware of what is happening to “our common home” as Pope Francis writes in Chapter 1 of Laudato Si. In Chapter 2, he invites us to reflect on the Gospel of Creation… When we celebrate what is right in the world, then we will have the passion and the wisdom to know what needs to be done to conserve and protect this precious gift now and for generations to come. Check out http://catholicclimatemovement.global/world-day-of-prayer/ for ways for ways "to live more simply so that  others may simply live."

ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDSHIP:

(for the September 12/13 Bulletin)

In his Encyclical on the Environment, Pope Francis said, “access to safe drinkable water is a basic and universal human right, since it is essential to human survival.”  You can help conserve water by avoiding buying new “water-intensive” products such as cotton, electronics, and paper, which all require a lot of water in their production. Also, try buying used clothing and recycled paper whenever possible. In doing so, we can be stewards of the earth and conserve water for our spiritual brothers and sisters who don’t have access to safe drinking water.

200329 mary

Mary Immaculate, our Mother and our Patroness,
we ask you to intercede for us with your Son,
as you did at the wedding in Cana.

Pray for us, loving Mother,
and gain for our diocese, our nation and our world,
for our families and loved ones,
the protection of your Maternal mantle from this dreaded virus.

In this time of trial and testing,
teach all of us to love one another and to be patient and kind.
Help us to bring the peace and healing Presence of Jesus to our land and to our hearts.

We come to you with confidence,
knowing that you are our compassionate mother,
health of the sick and cause of our joy.
Keep us in the embrace of your arms,
Help us always to know the love of your Son, Jesus our Lord.

AMEN.

SEASON OF CREATION: September 1 – October 4

Season of Creation is an annual ecumenical celebration of prayer and action to protect our common home starting September 1 – the World Day of Prayer for Creation – and continuing to October 4 – the feast of St. Francis of Assisi. This year, the celebration takes place in the Laudato Si’ Year of celebration called for by Pope Francis, and we are invited to take part.

The Laudato Si’ group and the Faith and Ecology groups around the diocese are planning opportunities for learning more about the issues presented through three Zoom discussion: September 3, September 17 and October 1. All three sessions will run from 7pm to 8pm. Details are still being finalized and will be posted on the diocesan Laudato Si’ Webpage and Facebook Page.

TIPS ON HOW TO SPOT SPOOFING OR PHISHING SCAM EMAILS: A Reminder from the IT Director

There has been an increase in the number of Spoofing or Phishing emails throughout the diocese. Email spoofing is an email message with a forged header (from) address. The message appears to have originated from a legitimate or familiar source. It is often used to trick people into providing information, giving money, or infecting your computer with a virus. The following are some tips on how to spot a spoofing or phishing email:

  • Don’t trust the display name.
  • Verify the “from email address”.
  • Check for grammatical or spelling mistakes within the email;
  • Look at the salutation;
  • Never provide personal, bank or credit card information in an email;  The Diocese, Priests and others will never ask for money or personal information.
  • Beware of urgent or threatening language in subject line;
  • Don’t click on attachments or a link;
  • Don’t reply to a suspect email;

If you are unsure, contact ifawcett@rcdony.org or call the person or send them a new email to the address that you have in your contacts.

REQUEST FOR USED RELIGIOUS ITEMS

A woman by the name of Kimberly Walters from a ‘St. Mary’s Mission’ in Lancaster, Pennsylvania is emailing some of our parishes, claiming to “find new homes for used Religious items.”  This woman is asking for sacred vessels, vestments, statuary, rosaries, etc. that are no longer being used.  Although the email states these items will be given to parishes and organizations in need of them, the Diocese of Harrisburg has informed us this woman is selling these items on eBay.   Please do not send this woman any sacred vessels or other religious items from your parish.  Thank you.

200629 census2

COMPLETE THE 2020 CENSUS: respond now.

It is important to complete the census.  Census results affect planning and funding for education—including programs such as Head Start, Pell Grants, school lunches, rural education, adult education, and grants for preschool special education; planning and funding for infrastructure—including programs for highway planning and construction, Section 8 housing, federal transit, community development, and rural water and waste disposal systems; planning and funding for employment and training—including programs for vocational rehabilitation state grants, dislocated workers, and American Indian and Alaska Native employment and training; planning and funding for healthcare—including programs such as Medicaid, Medicare Part B, State Children’s Health Insurance, and the prevention and treatment of substance abuse.

A census response is required from every property, including seasonal homes: If you live at multiple places throughout the year, count yourself at the address where you live and sleep most of the time.  If you split your time evenly between two or more places, count yourself where you were staying on April 1, 2020.  However, a census response is required from each and every property.200629 census
