RETIREMENT FUND FOR RELIGIOUS ANNUAL APPEAL: December 9

The anual collection for the Retirement Fund for Religous will take place the weekend of December 8 and 9.  Below please find bulletin announcements for the weekend before, during and after the collection, as well as a suggested pulpit announcement.

Week before the collection: Dec. 1/2

Support the Retirement Fund for Religious. A donor writes, “Your flyer touched my heart—seeing the retired religious, such memories surfaced.” Do you remember the sisters, brothers, or religious order priests who made a positive difference in your life? Today many are elderly and need assistance. Their religious communities struggle to meet retirement needs while continuing to serve the People of God. Please give to next week’s second collection.

Week of the collection: Dec. 8/9

Aging religious need your help. Senior Catholic sisters, brothers, and religious order priests ministered for years for little to no pay. Their sacrifices now leave their religious communities without adequate retirement savings. Your gift to today’s second collection for the Retirement Fund for Religious helps to provide medications, nursing care, and more for tens of thousands of elderly religious. Please be generous.

Week after the collection: Dec. 15/16

Religious give thanks. “This money is pure gift,” writes a religious sister of the support made possible by the Retirement Fund for Religious. “It enables us to continue providing care for our elderly sisters.” Your gift to last week’s collection helps hundreds of religious communities meet pressing retirement needs while continuing to serve the People of God. Thank you for your generosity!

Suggested Pulpit Announcement for December 8/9:

Elderly Catholic sisters, brothers, and religious order priests need your help. The North Country has been and continues to be blessed by men and women who give their lives in service to the Lord as consecrated religious. Many served for years in our Catholic schools, hospitals, and parishes – often for little or no pay. Now is our turn to support them through the Retirement Fund for Religious. Your gift to the Appeal provides funding for medications, nursing care and more. Please give to those who have given a lifetime.

CHRISTMAS COLLECTION FOR SUPPORT OF THE PRIESTS RETIREMENT PLAN: Bulletin Announcements

75% of the Parish Christmas collection goes to support the Priest's retirement plan.  The worksheet will have been mailed to parishes along with a cover letter for pastors.  These are also available on the Fiscal Office Pastoral Documentation site.  Below are suggested bulletin announcement leading up to the collection as well as a suggested "thank you" for the January 5th Bulletin.

For parish bulletins on the weekend of 8 December 2018:

The Diocese of Ogdensburg’s Retirement Plan for Priests has long been supported by parish contributions from its annual Christmas Collection.  Currently 37 retired priests, and 9 active priests age 70 and older, are expected to receive pension benefits of $872,000 in 2018-19.  Also 100% of the cost of health insurance premiums for retired priests is paid by the Plan.  Your generous contribution not only supports current retirees but will also help provide for the retirement needs of priests who will retire in the future.  Say thank you to your pastor and all priests of the diocese through a generous contribution to our Christmas Collection.

For parishes served by religious priests:

Seventy-five percent (75%) of our parish’s annual Christmas Collection will be contributed to the priest’s religious order to provide for the needs of our retired priests and others who will retire from active ministry in the future.  Please be generous to the Christmas Collection and show your appreciation to your priests through your gift.  Thank you so much!

For parish bulletins on the weekend of 5 January 2019:

Thank you for your generous gift in our Christmas collection.  Like every North Country parish we forward 75% of the collection to the diocese to fund pensions for retired priests.  Pension needs for the future as well as obligations for the next year are being met thanks to your generous donation.

ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDSHIP

(for the December 1/2 Bulletin)

As we approach a time of year when we celebrate the birth of Christ there are three lessons that Pope Francis speaks of from Mary, Christ's mother. He said “Mary teaches people to experience the joy of Christ and share it with others; to never let adversity beat you down; and always help those in need with love and mercy.” Our greatest gift for giving should embody those lessons. Give gifts that will be good for our ‘common home.’

ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDSHIP

(for the December 8/9 Bulletin)

As you prepare to celebrate the birth of Christ who is the Light of the world, consider ways that YOU might bring the light of His love to others. In the words of Pope Francis, “Creation is a gift, it is a wonderful gift that God has given us, so that we care for it and we use it for the benefit of all always with great respect and gratitude.” Suggestion: In gratitude for the gift of light, purchase LED lights for your decorations and around your home. This will be a “drawdown” on your electric bill and benefit all of life on the planet by reducing your carbon output. For more info. see: Drawdown ed. Paul Hawken

PLANNED GIVING: MEMORARE LEGACY SOCIETY

Have you already or have been thinking about leaving a legacy by designating a portion of your assets to pass at death to the Diocese of Ogdensburg, your parish or school or diocesan program or organization?  The Memorare Legacy Society honors and recognizes the generosity and vision of those who have chosen to leave a legacy to the Diocese of Ogdensburg through estate or deferred gifts.  Members of this society are those who have informed the Diocese of a planned gift that, in the future, will benefit the Diocese of Ogdensburg or any of its parishes or programs.  This ensures a continuous commitment of care to their Church, to the Church’s vision and to the charitable works that flow from her missions through their thoughtful planned gift. For more information on the Memorare Legacy Society, contact: Scott Lalone, Executive Director, Development Office 393-2920, slalone@rcdony.org.
