SACRED SPACES OPEN HOUSE: Celebrating Religious Art and Architecture

Sacred Sites Open House May 18 and 19, 2019

Pastors, please consider enrolling in the 9th Annual Sacred Sites Open House organized by the New York Landmark Conservancy. This statewide open house will take place May 18th and 19th. Last year, some 10,000 New Yorkers and visitors explored hundreds of magnificent sacred spaces across the state. The Conservancy is reaching out to churches throughout the North Country in the hope that they will participate. This is a wonderful opportunity to showcase our parishes’ art, architecture, and history … as well as the vital cultural and social service programs we provide in our communities.
This is a terrific chance for our friends, neighbors and our own parishioners to contemplate the beauty of our churches and parishes. This can include, but is not limited to, offering guided tours, organ/choir recitals, and history presentations. The event can take place on Saturday, May 18th and/or Sunday, May 19th.

To participate:

1. Register your parish at this link:
https://nylandmarksconservancy.formstack.com/forms/sacred_sites_open_house_registration_form

2. Email me, Paul Schrems (catholicrectory@twcny.rr.com) so that I can notify the local media.

NOTE: Register by April 1st to be included in the official press release.
Register by May 3rd to be included in the on-line database.

OCP PARISH GRANTS PROGRAM: Attention Pastors and Parish Musicians

As part of OCP’s ongoing commitment to service, the provide direct financial assistance to Roman Catholic parishes across the United States through our annual OCP Parish Grants program. Since its inception in 2001, we have provided nearly $2.8 million in support of parishes looking to enhance their worship experience.  OCP is accepting applications through May 30, 2019 for grants to be used for liturgical and/or musical purposes.

The OCP Parish Grants program is a unique program of direct financial grants authorized by the OCP Board of Directors to assist parishes seeking to enhance the worship experience of their parish community. Grants are awarded annually, and the number and amounts given vary from year to year. It was established as a means of providing Catholic churches with financial support for religious, educational and charitable purposes.

Parish Grant applications are open to: Roman Catholic parishes located within the 50 US states that did not receive an OCP Parish Grant in 2018.  Recipients of a Parish Grant must use the money for liturgical and/or musical purposes.

Parish Grants are commonly used for:

Improving multicultural ministries with additional training and purchasing of bilingual worship materials
Providing online, digital or electronic resources to support liturgy preparation
Upkeep, repair and replacement of musical instruments, equipment and facilities
Purchasing music, hymnals and other worship materials
Attending or hosting musical or liturgical conferences or workshops

All applicants will be notified of the results of their application. Award decisions are at OCP’s sole discretion, and all decisions are final. Recipients of an OCP grant must comply with any and all applicable laws and regulations in connection with the grant and the funded project. In order to protect your privacy, any information shared with OCP in connection to the grants program will be used to process your application and will not be shared with anybody else, unless or except as authorized by you, the applicant. This grant program is void outside of the U.S. and where prohibited by law. Recipients must allow for public announcement of their award by OCP and be willing to share their experiences through OCP publications and other media.

Applications are only accepted online at www.ocp.org/parish-grants.  See the same link for more information or call 1-800-LITURGY (548-8749)

ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDSHIP

(for the March 23/24 Bulletin)

From the beginning of Creation until today God has given us a thirst for ordinary water and a thirst for the water of life. (See John 4:5-41) Let us feast on the gift of clean water each time we use it this week and give thanks for it. As good stewards, we are called to use it responsibly. Make a list of those activities at home that requires water. SUGGESTED LENTEN FAST: Choose one of these activities and "fast" from using more than is necessary, i. e. in the shower, in the bathroom, in the kitchen, etc. Remember our 'neighbors' who lack access to clean water.

NEW

ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDSHIP

(for the March 30/31 Bulletin)

“Did you know that 89% of plastics in the ocean depths come from single use items?” (Deep-Sea Database) Many of these items are used for less than 15 minutes. Pay attention this week to the single use plastics that you use in your daily routine. SUGGESTED LENTEN FAST: Choose one of the single use plastics that you use and replace it with a reusable one, such as durable reusable bottles, containers for lunches, leftovers and liquids, reusable produce bags, i.e. This simple choice for fasting can be a step in being better stewards of God's creation and embracing Christian simplicity.

IHC MYSTERY PLAYERS: Presentation of the Stations of the Cross, Star Lake, NY

IHC MYSTERY PLAYERS Lent calls to mind many ancient traditions in the Catholic Church, one being the Stations of the Cross. The IHC Mystery Players from Watertown, NY, present, in a very creative way, the centuries old stations. Meditation and contemplation on the death and resurrection of Jesus in the central mystery in the prayer life of the Catholic Church. The Mystery Players of the Middle Ages focused on the presentation of this central mystery. Connected to ancient Mystery Plays, the IHC Mystery Players bring the station to the modern level through the use of special lighting, music, pantomime, and paraliturgical readings. Using the sanctuary of the stage, the Paschal Mystery is recreated in a moving, dramatic presentation.
This group has performed extensive throughout New York State, as well as in New jersey, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, Connecticut, and Canada. They will be performing on Friday, March 22nd at 7:30pm at St. Hubert’s Church in Star Lake, NY. We strongly encourage everyone to attend this unique and powerful prayer experience.
Please be advised that small children may be frightened due to the nature of the play. Please refrain from taking pictures during the actual event.
