RETIREMENT FUND FOR RELIGIOUS ANNUAL APPEAL: December 9

The annual collection for the Retirement Fund for Religious will take place the weekend of December 8 and 9.  Below please find bulletin announcements for the weekend before, during and after the collection, as well as a suggested pulpit announcement.

Week of the collection: Dec. 8/9

Aging religious need your help. Senior Catholic sisters, brothers, and religious order priests ministered for years for little to no pay. Their sacrifices now leave their religious communities without adequate retirement savings. Your gift to today’s second collection for the Retirement Fund for Religious helps to provide medications, nursing care, and more for tens of thousands of elderly religious. Please be generous.

Week after the collection: Dec. 15/16

Religious give thanks. “This money is pure gift,” writes a religious sister of the support made possible by the Retirement Fund for Religious. “It enables us to continue providing care for our elderly sisters.” Your gift to last week’s collection helps hundreds of religious communities meet pressing retirement needs while continuing to serve the People of God. Thank you for your generosity!

Suggested Pulpit Announcement for December 8/9:

Elderly Catholic sisters, brothers, and religious order priests need your help. The North Country has been and continues to be blessed by men and women who give their lives in service to the Lord as consecrated religious. Many served for years in our Catholic schools, hospitals, and parishes – often for little or no pay. Now is our turn to support them through the Retirement Fund for Religious. Your gift to the Appeal provides funding for medications, nursing care and more. Please give to those who have given a lifetime.

CHRISTMAS COLLECTION FOR SUPPORT OF THE PRIESTS RETIREMENT PLAN: Bulletin Announcements

75% of the Parish Christmas collection goes to support the Priest's retirement plan.  The worksheet will have been mailed to parishes along with a cover letter for pastors.  These are also available on the Fiscal Office Pastoral Documentation site.  Below are suggested bulletin announcement leading up to the collection as well as a suggested "thank you" for the January 5th Bulletin.

For parish bulletins on the weekend of 8 December 2018:

The Diocese of Ogdensburg’s Retirement Plan for Priests has long been supported by parish contributions from its annual Christmas Collection.  Currently 37 retired priests, and 9 active priests age 70 and older, are expected to receive pension benefits of $872,000 in 2018-19.  Also 100% of the cost of health insurance premiums for retired priests is paid by the Plan.  Your generous contribution not only supports current retirees but will also help provide for the retirement needs of priests who will retire in the future.  Say thank you to your pastor and all priests of the diocese through a generous contribution to our Christmas Collection.

For parishes served by religious priests:

Seventy-five percent (75%) of our parish’s annual Christmas Collection will be contributed to the priest’s religious order to provide for the needs of our retired priests and others who will retire from active ministry in the future.  Please be generous to the Christmas Collection and show your appreciation to your priests through your gift.  Thank you so much!

For parish bulletins on the weekend of 5 January 2019:

Thank you for your generous gift in our Christmas collection.  Like every North Country parish, we forward 75% of the collection to the diocese to fund pensions for retired priests.  Pension needs for the future as well as obligations for the next year are being met thanks to your generous donation.

REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH ACT FACT SHEET: Codifying Roe V Wade Myth

The NYS Catholic Conference has provided a fact sheet explaining why the proposed Reproductive Health Act is not merely codifying Roe V Wade. RHA must be examined not only for what it would newly enact into law, but also for what it would repeal from current law. Please contact your representative soon. The Senate plans to pass it quickly in 2019. For more information see: https://www.nyscatholic.org/2018/01/abortionexpansion/ and https://www.rcdony.org/pro-life.html

ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDSHIP

(for the December 15/16 Bulletin)

A Tip for Christmas Shopping: Resist the “gospel of consumption” that says ‘more is better.’ Embrace the Christian spirituality that says ‘less is better’ and proposes a growth marked by moderation and the capacity to be happy with little. Laudato Si #222 Buy less, waste less and enjoy it more!
