CHRISTMAS COLLECTION FOR SUPPORT OF THE PRIESTS RETIREMENT PLAN: Bulletin Announcements

75% of the Parish Christmas collection goes to support the Priest's retirement plan.  The worksheet will have been mailed to parishes along with a cover letter for pastors.  These are also available on the Fiscal Office Pastoral Documentation site.  Below are suggested bulletin announcement leading up to the collection as well as a suggested "thank you" for the January 5th Bulletin.

For parish bulletins on the weekend of 8 December 2018:

The Diocese of Ogdensburg’s Retirement Plan for Priests has long been supported by parish contributions from its annual Christmas Collection.  Currently 37 retired priests, and 9 active priests age 70 and older, are expected to receive pension benefits of $872,000 in 2018-19.  Also 100% of the cost of health insurance premiums for retired priests is paid by the Plan.  Your generous contribution not only supports current retirees but will also help provide for the retirement needs of priests who will retire in the future.  Say thank you to your pastor and all priests of the diocese through a generous contribution to our Christmas Collection.

For parishes served by religious priests:

Seventy-five percent (75%) of our parish’s annual Christmas Collection will be contributed to the priest’s religious order to provide for the needs of our retired priests and others who will retire from active ministry in the future.  Please be generous to the Christmas Collection and show your appreciation to your priests through your gift.  Thank you so much!

For parish bulletins on the weekend of 5 January 2019:

Thank you for your generous gift in our Christmas collection.  Like every North Country parish, we forward 75% of the collection to the diocese to fund pensions for retired priests.  Pension needs for the future as well as obligations for the next year are being met thanks to your generous donation.

DAY OF PRAYER FOR LEGAL PROTECTION OF UNBORN CHILDREN: January 22nd Day of Prayer and Fasting

The over 56 million abortions since the 1973 decisions of Roe v. Wade and Doe v. Bolton reflect with heartbreaking magnitude what Pope Francis means by a “throwaway culture.” However, we have great trust in God’s providence. We are reminded time and again in Scripture to seek the Lord’s help, and as people of faith, we believe that our prayers are heard. The General Instruction of the Roman Missal designates January 22 as a particular day of prayer and penance, called the "Day of Prayer for the Legal Protection of Unborn Children”: “In all the Dioceses of the United States, January 22 shall be observed as a particular day of prayer for the full restoration of the legal guarantee of the right to life and of penance for violations to the dignity of the human person committed through acts of abortion.” As individuals, we are called to observe this day through the penitential practices of prayer and fasting. Another way to take part is participating in special events to observe the anniversary of Roe v. Wade. If you are unable to participate physically, please pray for those who are traveling to Washington DC to March for Life. Thank you for your prayers. RESPECT LIFE COLLECTION: January 26/27

The weekend of January 26/27 is the annual Respect Life Collection. Last year twenty-one grants were awarded which benefited those working to build a Culture of Life in our diocese. It's important with this year's legislative climate that we provide alternatives to abortion and help to educate the next generation. The collection provided funds for 7 Gabriel Projects, Plattsburgh Crisis Pregnancy Center, Birthright, Right to Life affiliates, 4 pilgrimages to the DC March for Life (two high school, one college and one family bus), 3 Pro-Life County Fair Booths as well as other pro-life efforts.

Grant applications are online at the Respect Life Office website: https://www.rcdony.org/pro-life/respect-life-grant.html . The deadline for this year's application is February 28th. Thank you for your generosity.

REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH ACT FACT SHEET: Codifying Roe V Wade Myth

The NYS Catholic Conference has provided a fact sheet explaining why the proposed Reproductive Health Act is not merely codifying Roe V Wade. RHA must be examined not only for what it would newly enact into law, but also for what it would repeal from current law. Please contact your representative soon. The Senate plans to pass it quickly in 2019. For more information see: https://www.nyscatholic.org/2018/01/abortionexpansion/ and https://www.rcdony.org/pro-life.html

ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDSHIP

(for the December 29/30 Bulletin)

What brings ‘joy to your heart’ as you recall this past year’s experiences of the awesomeness of God’s power and love manifested in Creation? In the Canticle of the Three Young Men (Daniel 3:57-88), they found an abundance of aspects of Creation for which to ‘Bless the Lord’ …even “ice and snow, frost and chill, along with light and darkness, birds of the air and all water creatures.” To end the year why not pray the Canticle or make up your own prayer of praise to God for the things that bring 'joy to your heart.

NEW

ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDSHIP

(for the January 5/6 Bulletin)

What brings ‘tears to your eyes’ when you look around at what is happening to “our Common Home” for which we as humans have been called to ‘steward?’ (Genesis 2:15) In the book entitled: Ten Commandments For the Environment, based on Pope Benedict XVI’s teachings, we hear him say “we must awaken ..and face up to this great challenge and find an ethical capacity to change the situation of the environment for the good.” Did you know that one practical step he took was to place solar panels on the roof of the Paul VI auditorium? What is one practical step you could resolve to do this New Year that would respond to the situation that brings ‘tears to your eyes?’
