War, unrest and instability in the Middle East strike especially hard on Christians. Pope Francis asks us to support the Pontifical Good Friday Collection. In these times of crisis, the Pontifical Good Friday Collection provides humanitarian aid to refugees.

CATHOLIC ACTION NETWORK SIGNUP: May 4 and 5

Dear Pastors,

The Public Policy Committee is trying to increase membership in the Catholic Action Network (CAN). We will be doing a sign-up Saturday/Sunday May 4th and May 5th, 2019. We have distributed CAN postcards to each of the parishes in the bags you’ve picked up at the Chrism Mass. We are asking that you distribute the cards during the weekend Masses on May 4th and 5th, have the parishioners fill them out, collect the cards and return the completed cards in a bundle to the Catholic Charities Office at Wadhams Hall:

Catholic Charities
Diocese of Ogdensburg
6866 State HWY 37
Ogdensburg, NY 13669

Once we have received the cards, the Committee members will do the online data entry to register people.

People can also sign up electronically, if they wish, via smartphone by going to https://www.nyscatholic.org/nys-catholic-conference-action-center/

You do not need to return unused cards to us. Please keep them and make them available. If you need more cards, please let me know and I will make arrangements to deliver them to you.

Thank you for your assistance in this project. If you have any questions, please contact me: startaglia@rcdony.org or (315) 393-2920.

SACRED SPACES OPEN HOUSE: Celebrating Religious Art and Architecture

Sacred Sites Open House May 18 and 19, 2019

Pastors, please consider enrolling in the 9th Annual Sacred Sites Open House organized by the New York Landmark Conservancy. This statewide open house will take place May 18th and 19th. Last year, some 10,000 New Yorkers and visitors explored hundreds of magnificent sacred spaces across the state. The Conservancy is reaching out to churches throughout the North Country in the hope that they will participate. This is a wonderful opportunity to showcase our parishes’ art, architecture, and history … as well as the vital cultural and social service programs we provide in our communities.
This is a terrific chance for our friends, neighbors and our own parishioners to contemplate the beauty of our churches and parishes. This can include, but is not limited to, offering guided tours, organ/choir recitals, and history presentations. The event can take place on Saturday, May 18th and/or Sunday, May 19th.

To participate:

1. Register your parish at this link:
https://nylandmarksconservancy.formstack.com/forms/sacred_sites_open_house_registration_form

2. Email me, Paul Schrems (catholicrectory@twcny.rr.com) so that I can notify the local media.

NOTE: Register by April 1st to be included in the official press release.
Register by May 3rd to be included in the on-line database.

If you have any questions contact Paul Schrems at St. Mary’s Church in Canton: (314)386-2543 or at catholicrectory@twcny.rr.com.

ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDSHIP

(for the April 20/21 Bulletin)

“Spring is a permanent word of hope. It always comes. No matter how long or fierce the winter, spring forces its way through the tons of ice and snow…No matter how horrible the death, how unbearable the pain, and absolute the rejection, despite the tons of stone and dirt against the tomb, Easter happens and life grows green as all the forces of death are exhausted. May Christ Easter in us this April." (Author unknown)

NEW

ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDSHIP

(for the April 27/28 Bulletin)

As we celebrate God’s mercy to us on Mercy Sunday, we are called to extend His mercy to others through the corporal and spiritual works of mercy. In 2016 World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation Pope Francis proposed that he works of mercy include ‘care for our common home.’ “It is not about changing the world tomorrow, it’s about changing ourselves and how we look at the world…It requires simple daily gestures which break with the logic of violence, exploitation and selfishness and makes itself felt in every action that seeks to build a better world.”
