St. Peter Apostle
The Society of St. Peter
Apostle was founded in Cain, France in 1889 by two laywomen: Jeanne Bigard and
her Mother Stephanie. After overcoming
personal tragedies, they dedicated their lives to working for the missions. In
1888 the Bigards met a French missionary working Japan who asked for their
assistance to build a Church. By selling their possessions enough funds were
raised for the Church. Later, a Bishop
in Nagasaki had them help support his seminarians. In 1922, after traveling
through France, the Bigards were placed under Papal Patronage by Pope Pius XI.
Thus, The Society of St. Peter Apostle was born to promote the formation of
local clergy in the Missions, especially the young churches.
Donations help young men
as they prepare for the priesthood with a donation for a year of studies and go
toward the formation of men and women novices preparing for a life of service
as Religious Brothers and Sisters. Once
ordained, priests serve Missions in the dioceses where they were born and
raised. Currently, more than 30,000 major seminarians in some 400 seminaries
receive help from St. Peter Apostle, along with close to 10,000 men and women religious
novices.
Every summer, the Pontifical
Mission Societies of the Diocese of Ogdensburg conducts an appeal for the St.
Peter Apostle. Please consider offering your prayers and donations for the
growth of mission vocations.
