Early in the 19th century, a young French girl, Pauline Jaricot, inspired by
letters about the Missions from her brother, started gatherings of co- workers
in her family’s silk factory. The group prayed daily and offered a weekly of
penny to help the Church’s worldwide Missionary work. Pauline insisted that her
efforts be directed to all the Church’s Missions.
From Pauline’s efforts came the Society for
the Propagation of the Faith
,
now
of the Pontifical Mission Societies
. The
very first collection in 1822 supported mission diocese in the United
States who continued to receive funds until 1908, when we became mission
independent.
Today, the Pontifical Mission Society for
the Propagation of the Faith
continues to seek prayer and
sacrifice for the world’s Missions, now some 1,111 dioceses in Asia, Africa,
the Pacific Islands, the Middle East, and remote regions of Latin America. Help is offered for
pastoral and evangelizing programs, for catechists and their work, to build
churches and chapels, for the work of Religious Communities in health care and
education, and for communication and transportation needs. Today,
Pauline’s legacy and her quest continues to “love without measure…without
end.”

World Mission Sunday, our annual worldwide Eucharistic celebration for the Missions and missionaries of the world, will be celebrated on October 20, 2024. This collection on the next-to-last Sunday in October is a unique, global effort for the entire Church to provide for the building up of over one thousand local churches in Asia and Africa, the Pacific Islands, the Middle East and parts of Latin America and Europe.
Go and Invite Everyone to the Banquet (MT 22:9)
Today, on World Mission Sunday, we, “Go and Invite Everyone
to the Banquet.” We offer Eucharistic celebration, our prayers, and our
generous financial support. We invite those to join us as we witness to
mission in the world through our prayers and sacrifices for our brothers and
sisters around the world. As little as…
- $25 helps support a catechist for a month in remote Latin America
- $75 provides for the work of religious Sisters caring for orphaned
children in Africa
- $100 assists families in sending their children to schools in Asia
