WORKSHOPS & OTHER RESOURCES:

Our Core Mission: Sharing Jesus Christ

The Church exists to evangelize. As Pope Paul VI stated, sharing the Good News of Jesus Christ is "the grace and vocation proper to the Church, her deepest identity." (EN 14)

Empowering Disciples

The Office of the New Evangelization assists parishes and groups to form and equip intentional missionary disciples. We provide workshops and resources to help individuals:

  • Hear and be converted by the Gospel: The Good News of what Jesus Christ has done for us.
  • Encounter Jesus Christ: To experience His presence and love.
  • Choose to follow Him: Who is "the Way, the Truth, and the Life."
  • Be equipped to invite others: That they can invite others to encounter Christ, allowing them to experience His love firsthand.

Many people, including sometimes those who attend Mass regularly, have not heard the Gospel. They may have heard it with their ears, but their hearts have not been converted by this overwhelming good news of what God has done for us in Christ Jesus.

Several Recommended Evangelization Processes

The Office of Evangelization can either facilitate or train a small group or parish leaders to facilitate these processes in your parish.

Rescue Project: The Rescue Project is a 9-week experience of the Gospel in a powerful video presentation by Fr. John Riccardo, surrounded by an environment of prayer, food and small group conversation and sharing.

Who is it for? This series is appropriate for anyone but especially for adults in the pew or Catholics who may have drifted away from the faith. Even for committed Catholics, it can renew our understanding and awareness of what God has done and continues to do for us and invites us to respond, and to renew the fervor of our faith and prayer.

Here is a short trailer:

Alpha

Alpha, as the name suggests, is the beginning point.  It is a very basic explanation of Christianity, accessible to anyone. It is an 11-week series plus a day away (although other scheduling options exist). Each session starts with dinner, followed by a 20–30-minute video on a question of the Christian Faith and then a small group conversation.  Because of its introductory nature, Alpha creates a space for conversation around life's big questions – Is there more to life than this? Who is Jesus? Why and how should I pray? How does God guide us?  Who is the Holy Spirit?

Who is it for?

Alpha is for great for everyone, but the intended audience is those who are on the periphery of our faith or not Christian at all. It can be a wonderful refresher for practicing Catholics who may never have made a conscious decision to follow Christ.

The 99   The 99 Evangelization process is a three-pronged program:
The 99 Masterclass
is to train a group of committed Catholics who can then facilitate the 99 Experience which can then be followed up with the 99 Handbook to let participants deepen their faith.  All three parts work in a cyclic fashion: The Masterclass is to train leaders who can then run the Experience and facilitate small groups which can lead to a book study of the Handbook to go deeper, which can lead people into the Masterclass, and so on.

  • The 99 Master Class is a 6-week process. Each session consists of 3 very short (less than 10 minute) videos, each of which is followed by small group discussions.
  • The 99 Experience is a 3-day parish mission, which can be run as a video presentation followed by either individual reflection or small group discussion (preferred method).
  • The 99 Handbook is a book study for those who want to go deeper.

A full set of The 99 is available from the Office of Evangelization, and Marika Donders would be happy to run the Masterclass in your parish(es) to train a team to run the Experience.

Who is it for?

The 99 Experience is for everyone in our pews (The 99) and for the one who may have wandered away.  The 99 Masterclass is for committed Catholics who can help facilitate the 99 Experience. This video series invites people into a conversation about deepening their relationship with Jesus.   Sample text. Click to select the Text Element.

Workshops, Parish Missions and Retreats:

The Office for New Evangelization can create workshops, parish missions and retreats for parishes and groups tailored to specific needs. Below are some recent workshops and topics.

Hospitality:  More than Coffee and Donuts

A workshop suitable for a Saturday morning for anyone who wants to create a more hospitable and inviting environment where parishioners and visitors feel welcomed and free to encounter the love of Christ in Word and Sacrament and in the Community of Faith.

Eucharist and the Call to Discipleship

At the end of Mass, we are called to GO and share the Good News. We are sent to bring Christ, whom we have just received, out into the World, to have people encounter him through us. This is a 2-hour workshop/presentation for anyone in the parish, but especially those who are active in ministries.

Three Stories in Mark

This workshop can be done either as a simple presentation and discussion or as part of a day of reflection. Using three stories in Mark (the Rich Young Man, Disciples on the Way, and Blind Bartimaeus), this workshop illustrates the stages of discipleship: an encounter with Jesus, a challenge, a choice to follow or not, and then a sending on mission.

The Gifted Disciple

This is a 2-hour workshop, primarily for those in active ministries, to learn about charisms and how to begin to discern the gifts each of us have been given for the building up of the Church.

Other Topics that may be of interest:

We can create workshops, retreats and parish missions on a variety of topics.
Some broad topics include:

  • Evangelization in the Public Square
  • Door to Door evangelization
  • Evangelization and discipleship in a Secular Culture
  • Evangelization and Social Media / Technology
  • Synodality and Conversation in the Spirit
  • Spirituality of Leadership

Virtual Workshops:

Although in-person meetings are preferable, the Office of Evangelization can run many workshops and presentations virtually or as a hybrid (virtual and in-person) option.  This may be an especially good option in the winter.

Brown Bag Discussion – virtual discussions   The Office of Evangelization regularly runs virtual discussions based on a variety of resources such as:

  • Church Documents (such as Spe Salvi: On Christian Hope or Evangelii Gaudium: Joy of the Gospel and Laudato Si': On the Care of Our Common Home)
  • Video Series such as Evangelization with Chris Stefanic; Discipleship with Julianne Stanz; Mystery of the Eucharist with Bishop Cozzens; Where the World Meets the Church with Fr. John Ricardo; or the Generational Divide with Katie Prejean McGrady.
  • Books such as Divine Renovation by Fr. Mallon or Real Presence by Timothy O'Malley.

Brownbag meetings are usually run at lunchtime (hence the name) either on Mondays or Wednesday. Suggestions for future discussion topics are always welcome. Brownbag Discussions will always be advertised in eNotes and generally are run on the Microsoft TEAMS platform.
