DEPARTMENTAL INFORMATION:

FROM THE OFFICE OF THE CHANCELLOR

PARISH RECORDS: Offers for free digitizing

Spring is in the air and so are the “record digitization” companies. The Chancery and several parishes have seen offers like “We’ll digitize your records for free!” Parish records may not be shared with free digitization services.

These services are not free. They want to scan and make searchable parish sacramental records. The cost is a loss of privacy. The company will eventually be able to sell access to the information.

More important, parish sacramental registries may not be open to the public. Confidential information, such as the paternity of adopted children, is recorded in parish registries. Inquiries for baptismal, marriage and other records should be performed by trusted parish staff and only appropriate, requested information returned to the inquirer.

If you have any questions, please contact Deacon James Crowley, Chancellor at 315-393-2920 or jcrowley@rcdony.org.

ROSARY PILGRIMAGE: Join Pope Francis praying for peace in Syria

Pope Francis made a rosary pilgrimage on May 1 to invoke the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary for peace in Syria. The Pope invited us to spiritually join his pilgrimage. Bishop LaValley asks us to respond through the intentional dedication of a rosary to our twin diocese of Latakia and Bishop Chbeir.

Perhaps the intentions of a scheduled rosary in the parish could be for peace in Latakia and for the welfare of her people and the many refugees. Appropriate celebrations might be on May 21st, the new memorial of Mary, Mother of the Church or on Pentecost, the day prior. Another idea is May 31st, the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary or the Sunday prior. As Mary goes to visit Elizabeth, we extend our prayers to our brothers and sisters in Syria.

News about the Pope’s pilgrimage is available at https://www.catholicnewsagency.com/news/pope-francis-makes-rosary-pilgrimage-for-peace-in-syria-86610. Information about our twinning effort, Solidarity in Faith, is at https://www.rcdony.org/about-the-diocese/solidarity-in-faith.html.

HANDICAP GRANT: Attention Pastors

The Diocese of Ogdensburg annually offers two grants of $5,000.00 each to assist the parishes and institutions of the Diocese in providing assistance for the handicapped. These funds are made available from the annual contribution of the New York State Knights of Columbus to the Diocese of Ogdensburg. They will be distributed by the diocese on the recommendations of Catholic Charities and the Department of Education. The criteria for acceptability of the request cover several factors. Improvement in already existing programs or facilities will be considered. Some ideas for funding include: adapting facilities, special equipment, training for personnel, and program development. It is important to remember that programs which have received funding previously may not apply for the grant for the following three years. Programs/projects must show proof of additional sources of revenue to support the programs/projects. If you wish to be considered for a grant, please plan your proposal carefully. The grant application may be downloaded here. Applications must be submitted by May 25, 2018. Monies will be allocated after June 5, 2018. If you have any questions regarding the grant and/or the application, please contact vlalonde@rcdony.org or call (315) 393-2920 ext. 1411.

(for the June 2/3 Bulletin)

‘Skip the straw’ ‘No thanks’: “What kind of world do we want to leave those who come after us, to children who are now growing up?” Laudato Si (#160) Did you know that in the USA, 500 million straws are used every day, enough to circle the  planet 2.5 times? (https://thelastplasticstraw.org/) One step to end Plastic Pollution: when ordering a drink, tell the waiter you don’t want a straw, unless you really need one. Further step: ask restaurant to provide straws only when requested.

ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDSHIP

(for the June 9/10 Bulletin)

"The pace of consumption, waste and environmental change has so stretched the planet’s capacity…the effects of the present imbalance can only be reduced by your decisive actions, here and now." “Laudato Si” (#161) , Blessed are the Consumers, for they have a choice. One step to end Plastic Pollution: take a little extra time when shopping, select products without individual plastic packaging, and avoid products that are excessively wrapped in plastic.

PLANNED GIVING: Give Your House and Continue to Live There

You may want to make a major gift to our parish.  Why not consider real estate:  This is called a life estate gift.  This simply means that you give a piece of real estate, such as your residence, to our parish, obtain a charitable income tax deduction and retrain the right to live there as long as you want.  This arrangement removes the property from you estate and relieves your executor from having to dispose of your home at your death. Contact Scott Lalone at the Diocese at 315-393-2920 or Email slalone@rcdony.org  for further information.
