ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDSHIP

(for the March 11/12 Bulletin)

How can our Lenten fasting this year benefit not only ourselves but all those who share in God’s creation? One way is to choose ‘A Low Carb/on Diet,’* proposed by David Gershon in his book by that same title. Reducing the amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) our daily activities can have positive effects on the air we breathe.  CO2 REDUCTION TIP THIS WEEK: A typical clothes washer and dryer generates 5 lbs. of CO2 per washer/dryer cycle. For laundry, machine-washed in hot water, 90% of energy goes to heat the water, while only 10% powers the machine itself. Do full loads using cold water; dry full loads using automatic setting or use clothesline instead. Credit yourself with 100 lb. CO2 annually. (A Low Carb/on Diet:  A Thirty Day Program to Lose 5,000 Pounds. David Gershon, p. 11).

NEW

ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDSHIP

(for the March 18/19 Bulletin)

This week’s Lenten practice for a ‘low Carb/on diet’ to reduce the carbon CO2 in our air:  A water heater represents about 20% of the CO2 emissions of your home. REDUCTION TIP: Set your water heater thermostat at 120 degrees (or between low and medium, if no degrees on it.) Put water setting to ‘OFF’ or on pilot, when you go away on a trip. Credit yourself 150 pounds of CO2 annually. (A Low Carb/on Diet:  A Thirty Day Program to Lose 5,000 Pounds. David Gershon,  p. 25).
