DEPARTMENTAL INFORMATION:

FROM THE SOLIDARITY IN FAITH COMMITTEE CHAIR

Why? “Solidarity in Faith

When Bishop LaValley asked me to look into the twinning of our Diocese with the Maronite Diocese of Latakia in Syria he made it clear that this initiative would be called “Solidarity in Faith”. When I searched for a resource, to see what others had done, for guidelines I found that Catholic Relief Services had a “Parish Partnership Manual”. Since I found no information on Diocesan twinning I believed that the same principles would apply to our relationship with Latakia. In the introduction to the manual the very first items to be discussed are: Principles of Solidarity-based Partnership and From Helping to Solidarity. So I quote from the manual:

“This model is rooted in the belief that we all have much to give and receive by being in a relationship with a Diocese with a reality very different from our own, and that our relationship offers the whole Diocese an opportunity to grow deeper in faith and solidarity with our sisters and brothers in another country and by extension with all God’s children around the world, as a response to our Gospel call to be One in Christ.”

The Document states further: “A true partnership implies the building and nurturing of a relationship over a period of time that transcends one act of working together, or of sending a series of checks. If the partnership is based solely on resources, then the partner with few material resources is excluded from full and mutual participation. When a relationship is itself highly valued, it allows for mutual participation and transformation, and all are invited to participate equally, as we all have the ability to love and to pray and to be present to one another.”

NATURAL FAMILY PLANNING AWARENESS WEEK: July 23-July 29

The Annual Educational Campaign of the USCCB to increase understanding of God’s plan for married love. Includes posters and materials to parishes, together with Bishop LaVAlley's letter, bulletin announcements and prayers of the faithful (see Pastoral Documentation).  Additional info and homily suggestions are availalbe at http://www.usccb.org/issues-and-action/marriage-and-family/natural-family-planning/awareness-week/index.cfm.  Bulletin Announcements are also available below in the notices for bulletin section of this eNotes edition

NFP Awareness Week, which begins July 23, invites the faithful to discover and live God’s plan for married love. “Catholic teaching on sexuality, conjugal love and responsible parenthood reflect God’s loving design. The significance of NFP methods is that they are tools to help husband and wife live that reality by respecting God’s plan. These methods do nothing to harm God’s plan, which is why the Church supports the use of NFP in marriage” (USCCB 2017). To learn more, contact the Diocesan NFP Office, apietropaoli@rcdony.org or call 518-483-0459. ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDSHIP

(for the July 15/16 Bulletin)

“…all of us are linked by unseen bonds and together form a universal family...” (Francis 62) We are all interconnected and children of God. If you pull on one thread, the whole web is affected. Humans need to change their way of thinking from anthropocentrism (human-centered) to ecocentrism (nature-centered). Being conscious and mindful of our consumerism behaviors is one way to develop a more ecocentric mind. You can drive less and carpool more, waste less food and compost, and buy local and reduce your carbon footprint. All of these small changes add up. By being more connected with God and nature, we allow ourselves to see the bigger picture.

NEW

ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDSHIP

(for the July 22/23 Bulletin)

“Nature is filled with words of love, but now can we listen to them amid constant noise, interminable, and nerve-wracking distractions or the cult of appearances” (Francis 146). We live in a technologically advanced society where there are many distractions that take place in our everyday lives. Our smart phones, social media, materialism, all distract us from our connection with nature and God. A few simple ways to go back to our roots would be to turn off all the distractions, go for a walk or bike ride, meditate or pray. Instead of planning a large vacation, try a stay-cation where you can reduce your carbon footprint and seek out local attractions in your area or stay at home “unplugged” from technology.

NATURAL FAMILY PLANNING AWARENESS WEEK BULLETIN ANNOUNCEMENTS

NFP Awareness week is July 23-29 2017.  Below are three options for bulletin announcements.  Also see the information in the Departmental Section above.

1) "The Church's teaching on marital sexuality is an invitation for men and women--an invitation to let God be God, to receive the gift of God's love and care, and to let this gift inform and transform us, so we may share that love with each other and with the world." With these words, the U.S. Bishops conclude their document, "Married Love and the Gift of Life.".  As we celebrate NFP Awareness Week, the Diocesan NFP Office invites you to learn more about God's plan for married love.  Check out your parish book rack; visit our website at rcdony.org/nfp; and contact us at aprietropaoli@rcdony.org or at 518-483-0459

2) The Church's support for Natural Family Planning is not based on its being 'natural' as opposed to artificial.  Rather. NFP respects the God-given power to love a new life into being even when we are not actively seeking to exercise that power. However, because NFP does not change the human body in any way, people of other faiths have also come to accept and use it from a desire to work in harmony with their bodies. They have also found that it leads couples to show greater attentiveness to and respects for each other." (-- "Married Love and the Gift of Life/USCCB). To learn more, contact the Diocesan NFP Office at aprietropaoli@rcdony.org or at 518-483-0459.  Visit us at rcdony.org/nfp.  Also check  your parish book rack for information.

3) NFP Awareness Week, which begins July 23, invites the faithful to discover and live God’s plan for married love. “Catholic teaching on sexuality, conjugal love and responsible parenthood reflect God’s loving design.
