RETIREMENT FUND FOR RELIGIOUS ANNUAL APPEAL: December 7/8

The annual collection for the Retirement Fund for Religious will take place the weekend of December 8 and 9.  Below please find bulletin announcements for the weekend before, during and after the collection, as well as a suggested pulpit announcement.

Week before the collection: Nov. 30/Dec. 1

Help care for elders. “Thanks to support from the Retirement Fund for Religious, we are now in a much better position to care for our elders,” writes a religious sister. Your donation helps her religious community and hundreds of others provide for aging members and plan for long-term needs. Please give to next week’s Retirement Fund for Religious collection.

Week of the collection: Dec. 7/8

Aging religious need your help. Senior Catholic sisters, brothers, and religious order priests ministered for years for little to no pay. Their sacrifices now leave their religious communities without adequate retirement savings. Your gift to today’s second collection for the Retirement Fund for Religious helps to provide medications, nursing care, and more for tens of thousands of elderly religious. Please be generous.

Week after the collection: Dec. 14/15

Religious give thanks. “This money is pure gift,” writes a religious sister of the support made possible by the Retirement Fund for Religious. “It enables us to continue providing care for our elderly sisters.” Your gift to last week’s collection helps hundreds of religious communities meet pressing retirement needs while continuing to serve the People of God. Thank you for your generosity!

Suggested Pulpit Announcement for December 7/8:

Elderly Catholic sisters, brothers, and religious order priests need your help. The North Country has been and continues to be blessed by men and women who give their lives in service to the Lord as consecrated religious. Many served for years in our Catholic schools, hospitals, and parishes – often for little or no pay. Now is our turn to support them through the Retirement Fund for Religious. Your gift to the Appeal provides funding for medications, nursing care and more. Please give to those who have given a lifetime.

CHRISTMAS COLLECTION: Retirement Plan for Priests

For parish bulletins on the weekend of 7 December 2019:

The Diocese of Ogdensburg’s Retirement Plan for Priests has long been supported by parish contributions from its annual Christmas Collection.  Currently 33 retired priests, and 12 active priests age 70 and older, are expected to receive pension benefits of $900,000 in 2019-20.  Also 100% of the cost of health insurance premiums for retired priests, estimated at $220,000 this Fiscal year, is paid by the Plan.  Your generous contribution not only supports current retirees but will also help provide for the retirement needs of priests who will retire in the future.  Say thank you to your pastor and all priests of the diocese through a generous contribution to our Christmas Collection.

For parishes served by religious priests:

Seventy-five percent (75%) of our parish’s annual Christmas Collection will be contributed to the priest’s religious order to provide for the needs of our retired priests and others who will retire from active ministry in the future.  Please be generous to the Christmas Collection and show your appreciation to your priests through your gift.  Thank you so much!

For parish bulletins on the weekend of 4 January 2020:

Thank you for your generous gift in our Christmas collection.  Like every North Country parish we forward 75% of the collection to the diocese to fund pensions for retired priests.  Pension needs for the future as well as obligations for the next year are being met thanks to your generous donation.

ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDSHIP: Eco-Tips for a ‘greener’ Advent/Christmas

(for the December 21/22 Bulletin)

“Let the heaven be glad, let earth rejoice.” (Ps. 96)
A Christmas Celebration with Nature - Decorate a tree for the birds
Place seed bells, suet, pine cones with peanut butter on any tree in your yard, preferably a tree in the open where cats can be seen easily by the birds. This is a great family activity that includes creation and offers an important food source for birds during the winter.

SAFE ENVIRONMENT CORNER: Did you know? ...

Description: there are behavioral warning signs of child abusers? Training and education help adults to recognize grooming techniques that are precursors to abuse. Abusers frequently provide children with undue attention, lavish gifts, and allow participation in activities parents would not approve. It is also critical to be wary of age-inappropriate relationships. The Diocese of Ogdensburg has policies and procedures which guide interaction between adults and children. For more information, visit: https://www.rcdony.org/safeenv.html
