VIDEO: INVITATION TO CHRISTMAS

The Diocese has produced two videos to invite people to Christmas Masses.  The videos are on our Diocesan YouTube channel as well as our Diocesan Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/dioceseofogdensburg/ and twitter feed (https://twitter.com/rcdony).  Please share them on your parish social media and invite your parishioners to share them as well.

CHRISTMAS COLLECTION: Retirement Plan for Priests

For parish bulletins on the weekend of 7 December 2019:

The Diocese of Ogdensburg’s Retirement Plan for Priests has long been supported by parish contributions from its annual Christmas Collection.  Currently 33 retired priests, and 12 active priests age 70 and older, are expected to receive pension benefits of $900,000 in 2019-20.  Also 100% of the cost of health insurance premiums for retired priests, estimated at $220,000 this Fiscal year, is paid by the Plan.  Your generous contribution not only supports current retirees but will also help provide for the retirement needs of priests who will retire in the future.  Say thank you to your pastor and all priests of the diocese through a generous contribution to our Christmas Collection.

For parishes served by religious priests:

Seventy-five percent (75%) of our parish’s annual Christmas Collection will be contributed to the priest’s religious order to provide for the needs of our retired priests and others who will retire from active ministry in the future.  Please be generous to the Christmas Collection and show your appreciation to your priests through your gift.  Thank you so much!

For parish bulletins on the weekend of 4 January 2020:

Thank you for your generous gift in our Christmas collection.  Like every North Country parish we forward 75% of the collection to the diocese to fund pensions for retired priests.  Pension needs for the future as well as obligations for the next year are being met thanks to your generous donation.

ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDSHIP: Eco-Tips for a ‘greener’ Advent/Christmas

(for the December 28/29 Bulletin)

Did you know that January 1 celebrates World Day of Peace, when the Holy Father sends his message to all foreign ministers around the world? The theme for 2020 is “Peace as a Journey of Hope: Dialogue, Reconciliation and Ecological Conversion.” As a vital part of the Church what creative acts can I do in my family, my parish, my workplace that express my care for our ‘common home’ to insure a healthy, peace-filled future for our young children?

NEW

ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDSHIP: Eco-Tips for a ‘greener’ Advent/Christmas

(for the January 4/5 Bulletin)

One resolution that is often included on our new year’s list includes a healthier diet in one way or another. What better starting point for caring for God’s creation this year than taking care of our bodies that are a unique reflection of God’s goodness. Our stewardship extends to include all of creation. A healthier planet means a healthier people who are sustained by it. What is on your list?

SAFE ENVIRONMENT CORNER: Did you know? ...

Did you know…no one has the right to have access to children. If people wish to volunteer in a parish or Catholic school, they must follow diocesan guidelines on background checks, safe environment training, and codes of conduct. No one, no matter who they are, has an automatic right to be around children or young people who are in the care of the church without proper screening and without following the rules. The Child & Youth Protection Policy outlines the requirements for volunteers in the Diocese of Ogdensburg. For more information, or to view the policy, visit: https://www.rcdony.org/safeenv.html

PLANNED GIVING: Bequests

FOSTER GRANDPARENT PROGRAM: Volunteering in Local Schools

Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Ogdensburg hosts a Volunteer Program that may interest you. The Foster Grandparent Program. The Corporation for National and Community Service is a federally funded agency that has built volunteer-based programs over 50 years and counting. This program is right in your backyard. The Foster Grandparent Program of Northern New York has a purpose and it is to provide opportunities for low income persons aged 55 and older, to provide person to person services in health, education, and the welfare of children ages 21 and below. Foster Grandparents are placed in a classroom setting with a child or children who are in need of emotional support, development of basic learning skills, to provide friendship, companionship, encouragement, individual attention, and unhurried help. The Foster Grandparent also receives a small non-taxable stipend bi-weekly that cannot be held against any current benefits you may already have and you also get paid mileage for your travel. You receive paid holidays, vacations, sick and personal leave. The program currently has 40 volunteers and serves more than 100 kids per year. “Sometimes when you get to be my age, you wake up and say what good am I” and along came the Foster Grandparent Program that keeps me going! (Quote from the late Roy Foote age 83). If you think you may be interested in becoming a volunteer please call our office at 518-359-7688.
