History of the Missionary Projects of the Diocese of Ogdensburg
Missionary Projects of the Diocese of Ogdensburg replaced the annual Ogdensburg Peruvian Apostolate collection which supported our missionaries in St. Martin de Porres Parish, Mollendo, Peru. 2003 marked the closing of the Ogdensburg Peruvian Apostolate and the last summer for the appeal to directly aid our missionaries.
While our Peruvian mission has closed and the Peruvian appeal has ended, there is still the need for financial assistance to support and promote the pastoral work of the Catholic Church.
The Missionary Projects of the Diocese of Ogdensburg enabled us to contribute to the collection for the Church in Latin America which is sponsored by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops. Donations were also made in support of our North Country natives who are serving in mission territory in Africa, Nicaragua and Ecuador. Due to our parishioners’ generosity, Missionary Projects of the Diocese of Ogdensburg has been to send funding, both emergency and routine, to the Horn of Africa, the Church in Latin America, earthquake victims in Haiti, bought a new truck for Mollendo, assist with vocations in India coming here to work in our Diocese, sponsor students at orphanages in Nicaragua, just to name a few.
Missionary Cooperation Program – COOP
Each summer, the Diocese of Ogdensburg invites in to our churches 16-20 mission aid societies to participate in our Mission Coop program. This past summer, the East Side Deaneries in our Diocese hear from missionaries from around the globe. Your support of this program is appreciated and the impact of local generosity is felt around the globe.
Since the 1930’s, dioceses around the country have been implementing Mission Coop plans. First started in the Archdiocese of Newark, it’s original purpose was to help send mission societies to solicit funds for their mission efforts to appeal for vocations to their communities. Up to this point, churches often received request by missionaries to allow societies to make appeals to their parishes. Then, the Society for the Propagation of the faith took over these programs. Pastors embraced this idea because it took the burden of personal choice out of their hands and gave it to a priest who was only there for a few days enabling their parishioners to hear of missionary experience to promote a universal spirit.
COOP is conducted every summer in the Diocese of Ogdensburg where only one half of the Diocese participates at any given summer. Odd years are the Western Deaneries and even years are the Eastern Deaneries. It is conducted in summer months only and the collection is taken up on the same day as the MPDO collection, last Sunday in July typically. Monies are distributed to the societies by the year end. Real life missionaries look forward to being engaged with our members of local parishes. They find such joy in spending time in our Diocese in the summer, especially those that come from such far away places that are torn with disease, poverty and war.
