Many of you have read the book Forming Intentional Disciples by Sherry Weddell. Now there is a follow up book available that gives examples of how parishes can be transformed into centers of discipleship when pastors and the laity truly collaborate. When we follow Jesus' call and begin to use the gifts He has given us for the building up of the community of faith, parishes can truly come alive. At St. Catherine of Siena said: Be who God has created us to be you will set the world on fire. When parishioners start to recognize their gifts and use them for the community, amazing things can happen. This book is a collection of essays that show what can happen when people are allowed to dream and have the needed support structures to begin making the dream a reality. It is not a how-to book, but a book of examples of what parishes can be if we allow the Holy Spirit to move us. In seven essays, this little book gives examples of what parishes can be, giving hope to those whose parishes may not (yet) be centers of discipleship.
If you have not yet read the original book Forming Intentional Disciples by Sherry Weddell, I highly recommend reading that book first. It is a powerful book that will energize individuals to become committed intentional disciples were on fire to share Christ with their neighbor. The Office of Evangelization offers an eighth session parish workshop to unpack themes of this book. For more information contact the Office of Evangelization by emailing Marika at firstname.lastname@example.org.
There will also be a one-day Forming Intentional Disciples Conference on May 30, 2015 in Potsdam. Our speaker for this Conference will be Keith Strohm, the author of one of the essays in the Becoming a Parish of Intentional Disciples. This conference is for anyone interested in helping our parishes become centers of discipleship, evangelization, and mission. We hope that you can join us!
