Music
The Music Program of the schools of the Diocese of Ogdensburg is based on the New York State Standards. As with all of our educational programs, all instruction is centered in our Catholic Faith foundation. Spanning history and place, music has always been a vital part of the traditional ceremonies and festivities of the world’s cultures and in particular of the culture and tradition of the Catholic Church. Music can become a pathway to understanding ourselves and others. It can illuminate the traditions and religions of the many other cultures that are part of our nation and our world. Music transcends barriers of language, race, and culture and has the potential of helping humankind to achieve our goal of a peaceful society.
The content of Grade 3-4 Music is centered around the following New York State Standards areas: Music Essentials – Rhythm, Melody, Harmony, Form, and Expressive Qualities Create, Perform and Participate
- creating short pieces consisting of sounds from a variety of traditional, electronic and non-traditional sources
- sing songs and play instruments, maintaining tone quality, pitch, rhythm, tempo and dynamics performing expressively
- sing and play simple repeated patterns with familiar songs, rounds and partner songs and harmonizing parts
- performing ensembles, read moderately easy/moderately difficult music
- identify and use some of the roles, processes and actions used in performing or composing music
Know and Use Art Materials and Resources
- use classroom and nontraditional instruments in performing and creating music
- construct instruments out of material not commonly used for musical instruments
- use current technology to manipulate sound
- identify various settings in which music is heard and various resources used to produce music
- demonstrate appropriate audience behavior, including attentive listening in a variety of musical settings
- discuss ways that music is used by various members of the community
Respond and Analyze Works of Art
- listen to identify the strengths and weaknesses of specific musical works and performances including their own
- describe the music in terms such as melody, rhythm, harmony, dynamics, timbre, forms, styles
- describe the basic means by which the voice or instrument can alter pitch, loudness, duration and timbre
- describe their understanding of particular pieces of music and how they relate to their surroundings
Understand the Cultural Dimensions and Contributions of the Arts
- identify when listening and perform from memory a basic repertoire of folk songs/dances and composed songs from basic cultures that represent the people of the world
- identify titles and composers of well-known classical and blues/jazz selections
- identify the primary, cultural, geographical and historical settings for music they listen to and perform
Visual Art
The Visual Arts Program of the schools of the Diocese of Ogdensburg is based on the New York State Standards. As with all of our educational programs, all instruction is centered in our Catholic Faith foundation. Art, like music, is not a standalone program but is connected to all of life. Spanning history and place, art has always been a vital part of the traditional ceremonies and festivities of the world’s cultures and in particular of the culture and tradition of the Catholic Church. Art transcends barriers of language, race, and culture and has the potential of helping humankind to achieve our goal of a peaceful society.
The content of Grade 3-4 Art is centered around the following New York State Standards areas: Elements of Art – Line, Color, Value, Shape, Texture, Form and Space Principles of Design – Unity, Variety, Emphasis, Balance, Proportion, Pattern and Rhythm Media and Methods – Drawing, Mixed Media, Painting, Sculpture, Printmaking, Photography and Art History
Create, Perform and Participate in the Arts
- experiment and create art works in a variety of mediums
- develop own ideas and images through works based on themes, symbols and events
Know and Use Arts Materials and Resources
- understand the characteristics of various mediums – 2 dimensional, 3 dimensional, electronic
- develop skills with electronic media as a means of expressing visual ideas
- know some cultural institutions and community opportunities to interact with original art and artists
- reveal through own art work an understanding of how medium and technique influence creative decisions
Respond and Analyze Works of Art
- explain their reflections about the meanings, purposes and sources of works of art and describe their response
- explain the visual and sensory qualities found in a wide variety of art work
- explain the themes that are found in works of visual art and how visual art works are related to other forms of art
Understand the Cultural Dimensions and Contributions of the Arts
- look at a variety of art works and artifacts from world cultures to discover their important ideas, issues and events
- look at a variety of art works and artifacts from the U.S. and describe the style, organization and cultural meaning
- create an art work that shows the influence of a particular culture
Physical Education
The Physical Education Program of the schools of the Diocese of Ogdensburg implements the New York State Standards. As with all of our educational programs, all instruction is centered in our Catholic Faith foundation. The human person and thus the human body, as well as all life, is respected. Therefore proper development and understanding of the body is an important part of the development of the whole person. The elementary physical education program is designed around the following areas.
- Developing the gross and fine motor muscles of the body
- Coordinating the gross and fine motor muscles of the body
- Basic physical fitness activities and warm-ups
- Rhythm and dance
- Gymnastics
- Game skills
- Health and wellness of the body
