Music
The Music Program of the schools of the Diocese of Ogdensburg is based on the New York State Standards. As with all of our educational programs, all instruction is centered in our Catholic Faith foundation. Spanning history and place, music has always been a vital part of the traditional ceremonies and festivities of the world’s cultures and in particular, of the culture and tradition of the Catholic Church. Music can become a pathway to understanding ourselves and others. It can illuminate the traditions and religions of the many other cultures that are part of our nation and our world. Music transcends barriers of language, race, and culture and has the potential of helping humankind to achieve our goal of a peaceful society.
The content of Grade Five-Six Music is centered around the following New York State Standards areas: Music Essentials – Rhythm, Melody, Harmony, Form, and Expressive Qualities
Creating, Performing and Participating
- compose simple pieces that reflect a knowledge of melodic, rhythmic, timbrel, and dynamic elements
- sing and/or play a varied repertoire of old and contemporary songs, from notation with tone, pitch and loudness
- read moderately difficult music and respond appropriately to the gestures of a conductor
Knowing and Using Arts Materials and Resources
- use traditional and nontraditional sound sources including electronic ones, in composing and performing music
- use school and community resources to develop information on music and musicians
- use current technology to create, produce and record music
- demonstrate appropriate listening and other participatory responses to music a variety of genres and cultures
Responding and Analyzing Works of Art
- listen, analyze and evaluate their own and other’s performances, improvisations and compositions
- use appropriate terms to reflect a working knowledge of musical elements
- demonstrate a basic awareness of technical skills musicians must develop to produce aesthetical performances
- use basic scientific concepts to explain how music-related sound is produced, transmitted and perceived
Understanding the Cultural Dimensions and Contributions of the Arts
- identify the cultural contexts of performance or recordings and perform a varied repertoire of folk, art, and contemporary selections from the basic cultures
- identify titles and composers of well-known classical and blues/jazz selections
- discuss current and past cultural, social and political uses of music
Visual Art
The Visual Arts Program of the schools of the Diocese of Ogdensburg is based on the New York State Standards. As with all of our educational programs, all instruction is centered in our Catholic Faith foundation. Art, like music, is not a stand-alone program but is connected to all of life. Spanning history and place, art has always been a vital part of the traditional ceremonies and festivities of the world’s cultures and in particular of the culture and tradition of the Catholic Church. Art transcends barriers of language, race, and culture and has the potential of helping humankind to achieve our goal of a peaceful society.
The content of Grade 5-6 Art is centered around the following New York State Standards areas: Elements of Art – Line, Color, Value, Shape, Texture, Form and Space Principles of Design – Unity, Variety, Emphasis, Balance, Proportion, Pattern and Rhythm Media and Methods – Drawing, Mixed Media, Painting, Sculpture, Printmaking, Photography and Art History
Creating, Performing and Participation in the Arts
- experiment and create art works in a variety of mediums
- develop own ideas and images through works based on themes, symbols and events
Knowing and Using Arts Materials and Resources
- understand the characteristics of various mediums – 2 dimensional, 3 dimensional, electronic
- develop skills with electronic media as a means of expressing visual ideas
- know some cultural institutions and community opportunities to interact with original art and artists
- reveal through own art work an understanding of how medium and technique influence creative decisions
Responding and Analyzing Works of Art
- explain their reflections about the meanings, purposes and sources of works of art and describe their response
- explain the visual and sensory qualities found in a wide variety of art work
- explain the themes that are found in works of visual art and how art works are related to other forms of art
Understanding the Cultural Dimensions and Contributions of the Arts
- look at a variety of art works and artifacts from world cultures to discover their important ideas, issues and events
- look at a variety of art works and artifacts from the U.S. and describe the style, organization and cultural meaning
- create an art work that shows the influence of a particular culture
Physical Education
The Physical Education Program of the schools of the Diocese of Ogdensburg implements the New York State Standards. As with all of our educational programs, all instruction is centered in our Catholic Faith foundation. The human person and thus the human body, as well as all life, is respected. Therefore, proper development and understanding of the body is an important part of the development of the whole person. The elementary physical education program is designed around the following areas.
- Developing the gross and fine motor muscles of the body
- Coordinating the gross and fine motor muscles of the body
- Basic physical fitness activities and warm-ups
- Rhythm and dance
- Gymnastics
- Game skills
- Health and wellness of the body
