Diocese of Ogdensburg

The Roman Catholic Church in Northern New York

The Mathematics Program of the schools of the Diocese of Ogdensburg is based on the National Common Core Standards.  As with all of our educational programs, all instruction is centered in our Catholic Faith foundation.  In Pre-kindergarten mathematics, the focus is 1) representing, relating, and operating on whole numbers, initially with sets of objects; 2) describing shapes and space.

In the context of all mathematical instruction, students are expected to use basic mathematical practices which include:

  • making sense of problems and persevere in solving them
  • reason abstractly and quantitatively
  • construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others
  • make models using mathematics
  • use appropriate mathematical tools strategically
  • attend to precision
  • look for and make use of structure (patterns)
  • look for repeated reasoning

The content of pre-kindergarten is centered around the following Common Core domains and standards:
Counting & Cardinality

  • know number names and the count sequence
  • count to tell the number of objects
  • compare numbers

Operations & Algebraic Thinking

  • understand addition as putting together and adding to and understand subtraction as taking apart and taking from
  • understands simple patterns

Number & Operations in Base Ten

  • count to 20
  • represent a number of objects with a written numeral 0-5

Measurement & Data

  • describe and compare measurable attributes
  • sort objects and count the number of objects in each category

  • identify and describe shapes (squares, circles, triangles, rectangles)
  • analyze, compare, create and sort shapes
